Much More than a Field Trip

In early October, 70 eager TeenPact students gathered in Washington, D.C., for the Alumni Event, Back to DC. Joined by 20 chaperones and 7 TeenPact interns, along with other TeenPact leaders, this event serves as a pivotal opportunity aimed at inspiring and preparing young leaders for service and impact. One participant shares, “I absolutely loved TeenPact. Its organization and care for the students always amazes me.”

Momentous Experiences

As students explore the nation’s capital, they find themselves surrounded by the monumental history that shapes our nation. It’s not just the iconic landmarks that leave an impression. The relationships formed and lessons learned promise to last long after the week ends. Johnny Leifheit, TeenPact’s Program Director, emphasizes the importance of this experience, stating, “This was the first alumni program TeenPact offered. Every year, students choose this as a chance to connect with their peers and deepen their relationship with Christ, while furthering their understanding of our government and their roles in it.”

From the moment students arrive, they engage in exciting activities, educational sessions, and worship. Each day features impactful experiences, like a visit to the Holocaust Museum. One student reflects, “Back to DC helped me in my walk with the Lord and allowed me to see some amazing monuments for the first time.” Evenings are full of fellowship as students gather to discuss their learnings. “It is a lot of information, and I’m very grateful for the time spent with my fellow TeenPacters and staffers,” says another attendee. These moments foster deep connections that many describe as life-changing.

Event Director Chris May shares, “As the week closed, on Saturday evening we sang praise songs at the Lincoln Memorial. It was a powerful moment when we gathered together in worship, reflecting on our shared faith and commitment to serve.”

Back to DC is so much more than sightseeing in our nation’s capital.  It also offers an opportunity to gain skills in political philosophy, activism, and campaigning. Students participate in a mock presidential campaign, called The Race to the White House, learning about political messaging and teamwork. One participant states, “This time taught me a lot about voting and how important every vote is,” capturing the essence of their experience.

Reflections on the Profound Impact

A parent/chaperone adds their perspective, saying, “I have witnessed my child transform through this experience. The friendships and the lessons learned have instilled a sense of purpose and responsibility that I know will guide them for years to come.”

Students share various reflections throughout the week, with one participant stating, “It definitely grew my relationship with the Lord and helped me to step out of my comfort zone. I also felt greatly encouraged in my faith and inspired to stand up for what I believe.” Another attendee remarks, “There were many things that impacted me here at Back to DC this week. From all the speakers we heard from to the historical monuments and museums we visited, to even participating in a campaign of our own, there were so many things I learned. It was refreshing to hear speakers discuss worldly issues with a Christian worldview, which helped me gain a better understanding of many topics this year.”

One student expresses gratitude for the experience, saying, “I am so grateful to the Lord for blessing me with the opportunity to attend this event. From the Bonjour (morning devotionals) to the evening messages, each was convicting, rich, and full of objective truth. They served as powerful reminders of how I should live my life daily. Thank you for this week! My Rendezvous (time to reflect in a small group each evening) was filled with deep conversations.” Another participant echoes this sentiment, stating, “I am truly thankful for the chance to be here. The morning devotionals and evening messages were convicting and full of truth, reminding me how I should live my life every day.”

As the week concluded, students reflected on the profound impact of their shared experiences. “I made great memories here and will leave with a mind and heart eager to seek the Lord more,” one participant states. Another student shares, “There were many things that impacted me here at Back to DC this week, from the speakers we heard to the historical monuments we visited. I gained a much better understanding of various topics through a Christian worldview.” Others echo similar sentiments, affirming that the week reignites their passion for politics and faith.

The bonds formed during Back to DC extend beyond friendship, creating a community dedicated to uplifting one another in faith and purpose. “This experience greatly advanced my spiritual journey and my relationship with God,” one student states, underscoring the event’s significant impact in his life.

Aryn Rozier, Administrative Director, reflects on the overall influence of the event: “It’s very encouraging  to witness these students grow in their faith and understanding of civic responsibility. The connections they form here will serve them well in the future.” Bethany Hintze, Admin Director in training, adds, “This week is a wonderful blend of learning, fellowship, and spiritual growth. I see how these experiences shape our students into confident, Christ-centered leaders.”

Renewed Sense of Purpose

Back to DC is more than just a field trip to the nation’s capital. Instead, it is a transformative experience that blends leadership training, spiritual growth, civics education, community building, with unforgettable moments shared together. As participants leave for home, they take with them a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to serve others, inspired by their shared faith and experiences. “I learned a lot about Christ and our government, and more. We had amazing fellowship. Worshiping at the Lincoln Memorial was an amazing experience!” reflects one student, summing up the event’s significance.

This event showcases the power of gathering individuals dedicated to making a difference. With each returning alumni, the TeenPact community grows stronger, and we look forward to seeing how these young leaders will shape the future. Thank you to everyone who makes this event possible—Back to DC truly offers an unforgettable experience!
